The 2010 Scholarship


Eligibility Criteria

  1. The applicant must be enrolled full-time (as defined by the educational institution) in an apprenticeship, certificate, diploma or degree (undergraduate or graduate) program at an accredited post-secondary institution (public or private).
  2. In the event the number of eligible applications exceeds the year’s Scholarship budget, priority will be given to applicants who have not received this award previously from Local 002.

Persons Eligible to Apply

  1. A member in good standing of Local 002.
  2. A past member in good standing of Local 002, who has been a member of A.U.P. E. for a minimum of five years, who enrolls full time in an educational institution within the first year of job elimination.
  3. A member in good standing of Local 002 of A.U.P. E., may sponsor applicants who are:
    1. A spouse or Benefit Partner of the member or in an adult interdependent relationship with the member
    2. Financial dependants of the member or member’s Benefit Partner who are 25 years of age and under, and are either:
      1. Birth, adopted, or step children
      2. Long term (five years or more) foster children

    (The Committee may evaluate exceptions to the age limitation if there are special family circumstances. A letter and/or documentation would be required if an exception is requested.)

Application Process

  1. Application forms are available on the Local 002 Website.
  2. Deadline for applications to be received at the address specified on the form is July 30, 2010.
  3. Applications will include information about both the applicant and the Local 002 member (who may be one and the same). Social Insurance Numbers may be required if a scholarship is awarded.
  4. Incomplete applications may be rejected.
  5. The student and the Local 002 member (if different) must sign the application.
  6. The Committee is not responsible for applications lost in the mail.
  7. It is intended that successful applicants be notified by the end of August that year. However, no funds will be paid out until a copy of the student's confirmation of enrollment is received. A document from the Registrar or Admissions Office of the educational institution, including a course list must be provided to the Committee (care of the contact address specified on the Application form) as soon as they are available.
  8. It is intended that the funds be disbursed by the end of October that year.
  9. As a part of the Scholarship application submission, the applicant must attach a mandatory essay.
  10. All scholarship applications and essays become the property of the Local 002 Learning and Personal Development Committee.
  11. An eligible applicant may apply every year, but priority may be given to applicants who have not received a previous scholarship.
  12. Decisions of the Committee are final.

The Essay

  1. The Committee will annually decide the topic of the essay. It will be based on contemporary labour or social issues.
  2. The essay will be approximately 500 words in length with one-inch margins written using a 12 pt. Font and 1.5 line spacing.
  3. The Committee will select a person independent of the Committee members to judge and rank the essays.
  4. To prevent any perceived conflict of interest or bias in the judging of the essays, the Committee will assign each essay a number and remove any personal identification from the essays.
  5. All essays will be judged and ranked when they accompany a completed scholarship application and are received by the application deadline. Judges’ decisions are final.
